Friday Black

  • The Dock Street Theatre 135 Church Street Charleston, SC, 29401 United States (map)

Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah’s book of short fiction Friday Black made the New York Times best seller list recently, an astonishing feat for a debut collection. Its other accolades include: A National Book Foundation "5 Under 35 honoree" chosen by Colson Whitehead, winner of the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award plus outstanding reviews: “An excitement and a wonder” (George Saunders); “A surreal, startling debut collection...composed with brio and rare imaginative power, Friday Black recaptures the strange fear and excitement we first feel as child readers when we begin to learn that Grimm’s fairytales are approximations of the real world.” (The Guardian) The dystopian theme of the stories, which tackle racism and social unrest, fit the temper of the times. Adjei-Brenyah is the son of Ghanaian immigrants. He will be in conversation with Bill Goldstein, editor of the New York Times books website, book critic for the weekend edition of WNBC’s Today in New York and author of The World Broke in Two.
